Coaching Asian Community Kids Through Volleyball at a Weekend Chinese School
As a passionate varsity volleyball player, I have always believed in the power of sports to bring people together, build character, and promote a healthy lifestyle. COMMUNITY
As a passionate varsity volleyball player, I have always believed in the power of sports to bring people together, build character, and promote a healthy lifestyle. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to volunteer as a volleyball coach at a weekend Chinese school (by CCCCA, Cleveland Contemporary Chinese Culture Association), where I had the honor of working with a group of enthusiastic Asian community kids ages 10+ to learn volleyball.
Creating a Fun and Supportive Environment
One of the main goals of my volunteering work was to encourage these kids to learn and enjoy sports, specifically volleyball. I wanted to create a fun and supportive environment where they could develop their skills, gain confidence, and foster a love for the game.
Each weekend, I would arrive at the school gymnasium armed with volleyballs, cones, and a big smile. The kids would eagerly gather around, excited to start their volleyball training. We would begin each session with a warm-up routine to get their bodies ready for the physical demands of the game.
Starting with the Fundamentals
Once warmed up, we would move on to the fundamentals of volleyball. From teaching them how to pass, set, and spike, to explaining the rules of the game, I made sure to break down each skill into manageable steps. It was important for me to ensure that they understood the basics before moving on to more advanced techniques.
However, it wasn't just about the technical aspects of the game. I also emphasized the importance of teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship. Volleyball is a team sport, and these values are crucial for success both on and off the court. We would often engage in team-building exercises and friendly competitions to reinforce these principles.
Building Confidence and Encouraging Growth
One of the most rewarding aspects of my volunteer work was witnessing the growth and development of the kids over time. Many of them started off with little to no experience in volleyball, but with each passing week, I could see their skills improving and their confidence growing.
It was incredibly fulfilling to see their faces light up when they successfully executed a new technique or scored a point during a game. Their enthusiasm and dedication were contagious, and it motivated me to continue pushing them to reach their full potential.
Creating Lasting Connections
Beyond the volleyball court, my role as a coach allowed me to form meaningful connections with the kids and their families. I would often engage in conversations with the parents, discussing their child's progress and offering advice on how they could continue their volleyball journey outside of the weekend school.
These connections extended beyond the school year, as many of the kids continued to participate in volleyball programs in their local communities. It was heartwarming to know that I had played a small part in igniting their passion for the sport.
An incredibly rewarding experience in helping the Asian Community
Volunteering as a volleyball coach at a weekend Chinese school has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Through this role, I have been able to encourage Asian community kids to learn sports, specifically volleyball, while creating a fun and supportive environment for their growth and development. Witnessing their progress and forming lasting connections with them and their families has been truly fulfilling. I hope to continue making a positive impact in the lives of young athletes and inspire them to pursue their sporting dreams.
