Empowering Students and Building Community through Tutoring and Volunteering

For the past three years, I have had the incredible opportunity to tutor and volunteer with the Journey Learning Studio. This experience has not only been personally fulfilling, but it has also had a significant impact on the community we serve.

Creating a Positive Learning Environment

One of the primary ways that my work at the Journey Learning Studio has helped the community is by creating a positive learning environment for students. I've been teaching free Chinese and Stem classes online for the low-income families in the community. I also organized book drive to support kids and families to access with many books donated by the community.

By offering personalized tutoring sessions, we are able to cater to the unique needs and learning styles of each student. This individualized approach fosters a sense of confidence and motivation, allowing students to thrive academically. Many second generation immigrant families from China, Taiwan, and other countries benefited for the free tutoring and support.

Furthermore, the supportive and encouraging atmosphere at the studio helps to build students' self-esteem and belief in their own abilities. Many of the students who come to us initially lacking confidence in their academic skills leave with a newfound sense of self-assurance. This not only benefits them academically but also has a positive ripple effect in other areas of their lives.

Empowering Students to Reach Their Full Potential

Another way that my experience at The Learning Journey Studio has helped the community is by empowering students to reach their full potential. We believe that every student has unique talents and strengths, and it is our mission to help them discover and cultivate these abilities.

Through personalized tutoring sessions, we not only focus on improving academic performance but also on developing essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. These skills are not only beneficial in the classroom but also in the students' future careers and personal lives.

Many families expressed gratitude and how the program help their family. A 8th grade girl I learned Algebra told me, “I learned a lot from the math courses. They are great and it was fun. For example in math we played math games such as jeopardy. ” A parent who child who participated in reading course mentioned, “My kid loved that she had the opportunity to read some new books and learn about some new things. She is learning to pay more attention to detail and think deeply.”

Building Strong Relationships in the Community

My time workings with Journey Learning Studio has allowed me to build strong relationships with both students and their families. By working closely with students on a regular basis, I have been able to understand their individual needs, challenges, and goals. This deeper level of connection enables me to provide more effective support and guidance.

Additionally, building relationships with the families of the students has been invaluable. It allows for open communication and collaboration, ensuring that we are all working together to support the student's academic journey. This sense of community and partnership has a positive impact not only on the specific student but also on the broader community as a whole.

I am so glad that my experience tutoring and volunteering at the Journey Learning Studio has had a significant impact on the community. By creating a positive learning environment, empowering students to reach their full potential, and building strong relationships, we are able to make a difference in the lives of the students we serve. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the community in this way and look forward to continuing this meaningful work.
